[attr="class","rostercat2"] Jade Nguyen is the eldest daughter of Paula(Huntress) and Lawrence (Sportsmaster) Crock. Jade's parents both operated as criminals, and initially had a very successful career. During one of many crimes, a catastrophic failure led to Paula Crock being crippled and captured, at which point she also took the fall for her husband. As a result, she was sent to prison, and their relationship dissolved. During this time, Lawrence was left to care for Jade and Artemis – his daughters. Rather quickly, the relationship between Jade and her father became acrimonious due to his emotional and verbal abuse. It did not take long for Jade to run away, leaving Artemis to be raised alone by the Sportsmaster. Jade took her mother's maiden name because of her issues with her father – though interestingly followed in his line of work. Making use of the skills her mother and father had taught her, Jade became an assassin, often linked to the League of Shadows. Over the next decade, Jade honed her craft, operating as a masked killer known as 'Cheshire'. She became infamous for her use of poisons, and drew the ire of many vigilantes and heroes. I was in 2010 that she first crossed paths with 'the team' more popularly referred to as 'Young Justice.' As one of the team of 'Shadows' sent to assassinate Serling Roquette, she was met with failure – foiled by her sister, Artemis. However, Jade was able to use her knowledge of her sister's past to escape, threatening to expose faily secrets should the archer capture her. Jade's next assignment saw her attempt to disrupt the peace negotiations between delegates from North and South Rhelasia. She was foiled by the Red Arrow and subsequently arrested – not that it was a long incarceration. Soon after, she was freed by her father, whom she was then tasked with working alongside. For a long while, she worked against Young Justice, often clashing with the team, and was eventually asked to join The Light – a group who believed they could end the young heroes. However, Jade's loyalty was questionable – despite having blocked Artemis' escape from the island of Santa Prisca, she took a far more passive role in apprehending her, having already stated in a previous fight she had no want to kill her own sister. Indeed, she didn't fight her sibling at all, and instead allowed her father, Lawrence, to fall into quick sand, offering him no aid. Over the next few years, distanced from the Light, Jade returned to the League of Shadows, convincing them to allow a lost Roy Harper to join the group as a freelance operative (whilst knowing he had ulterior motives.) The pair worked together for quite some time after, Harper hoping he could persuade her to become a member of Young Justice. His attempts were unsuccessful – though, when the League discovered Roy's deception, Cheshire aided his escape. The pair went on to contnue Roy's search for 'Speedy' – the original Roy Harper cloned by Lex Luthor and The Light. They entered into a relationship and were married in 2014, Jade becoming pregnant soon after – though kept it a secret. Unfortunately, they broke up shortly after, Jade feeling Roy's obsessive and self-destructive drive to find Speedy was simply in vain. She rejoined the League of Shadows for a brief period, before cutting ties in order to give birth to her and Roy's daughter, Lian. The child's birth caused Jade to return to Harper, hoping that in doing so, he would change as a person, and in return, she offered him closure on Speedy – Cheshire had called in numerous favours and found a sole lead. The lead took them to the a Tibetan monastery, and it was indeed the place Harper's original had been cloned. There, the pair were reunited, and Cheshire went back into hiding, maintaining some relationship with 'her' Roy – the Red Arrow. In coming months, Artemis faked her death, with the aid of her friend Aqualad – who in turn seemingly joined the Black Manta. Believing the murder real, Cheshire swore revenge on the Atlantean, and it caused her to work alongside her father once more - the latter enraged at his daughter's passing, but also denied 'retribution' by The Light. Luckily, before the pair were able to kill Kaldur (which Cheshire came very close to doing), M'gann M'orzz intervened and revealed the truth to Cheshire and her father – that Artemis was alive and posing as Tigress. Her need for revenge gone, Cheshire fled the scene, and returned to her mother's house to reclaim Lian. There, she explained to a mournful Paula that Artemis was still alive. Since then, Jade has worked as she always has – doing jobs that suit her, often blurring or completely disregarding commonly held perspectives on what is 'good' or 'bad'.. [attr="class","rostercatsub2"]HISTORY | [attr="class","rostercat2"]She sat at the dock's edge, one foot hanging languidly over the side, booted toes only just skimming the quickly darkening ocean's surface. The sun's light was fast fading, and in her lap she held a long, wickedly bladed sai, the steel glinting even absent the afternoon's rays. Removing a thin vial from the inside of her emerald robes, she shook the colourless liquid within, then popped the stopper over the lid. With great care, she poured the contents over her weapon, drenching the metal, before dabbing at it with a dark cloth. The venom she coated her blade with was deadly, though not because it took life. Jade Nguyen was a master at mixing toxins, and the one she'd specifically tailored was a paralysis. Many major muscle groups would seize and shut down when her chosen poison was introduced to the human blood stream, though the heart and brain would continue to function – just. The body, however, would struggle to move at all, the venom freezing arms and legs in place, contorting them awkwardly. The nervous system would be left intact though – meaning pain could still be felt, and the target could do nothing to defend themselves against said pain. She had come to find it invaluable in interrogation – even brutes believing themselves mentally tough crumbled when suddenly lacking the ability to protect themselves, even though they could see, and indeed feel, various sharp objects being forced into their person. And it was brutes she had to contend with – the targets of the mission she'd undertaken. Only half a mile away from her location, built atop a rocky outcrop, hidden by thick jungle, was a fortified mercenary compound home to a large number of defected military agents and government officials from around the world. Believing themselves cheated by their own commanding officers and higher-ups, they gathered in a country where law enforcement was already stretched, and formed something of a revolutionary army, dangerous not only because of their skill, but the secrets each member brought to the table – the innermost workings of the world's strongest political regimes. Jade had little care for their origins or goals – but their secrets were of great interest to the assassin. Such things were invaluable: she could sell them on, or use them drum up business – and with such a wealth in one place, she couldn't ignore the call of the private army any longer. Having discerned the location of their base through rather unscrupulous means, she had quickly decided that there would be too many armed agents to risk insertion alone. She was highly skilled, not stupid. Sheer numbers and blind luck often bested honed talent – dozens she could perhaps overcome should an alarm sound, but hundreds? It was a risk not worth taking, and she would only have one opportunity. Thus, masquerading as a criminal enforcer, she had reached out to another villain, though one with a more superpowered background than her own. The Star Sapphire had been hired to cause a ruckus at the compound – her strength and power enough to distract a large number of the resistance Jade could encounter, thus allowing her access to the groups leaders, the masters of their secrets. The Sapphire's services had not come cheaply – but compared to what Jade stood to earn, the cost was worth it. A brilliant purple light caught the corner of the assassin's vision, and raising her gaze, she noted a shape streaking across the skyline – no doubt her partner. Leisurely moving to stand, Jade sheathed her weapon, replaced the vial in her robes and pulled down the mask that would cover her features, hiding her identity – the grinning face of the Cheshire cat.
