[attr="class","rostercat2"]Cassandra Cain is the daughter of David Cain and Sandra Wu-San – infamous assassins with strong links to the Leage of Shadows. Born not out of love but for a purpose, she was tutored in martial arts since birth, a girl raised in such a way that combat was as natural to her as breathing, moulded to be the ideal bodyguard for Ra's al Ghul. She represents the last of many attempts to train 'The One Who Is All', and came the closest to achieving the League's ultimate goal. As a child, Cassandra spent much of her time with her father, following his instruction as she honed her physical prowess in order to become the 'perfect weapon.' Indeed, from the age of one, her mother was entirely absent and contributed nothing to her upbringing. Instead of being taught to speak, read and write like most children, Cain was instead trained to read body movements and speak through actions. In doing so, the speech and language processors in her brain were focused solely on predicting and anylsing the body language of others, allowing Cassandra to assess, with unnerring accuracy, an individual's next movements. However, this also caused Cassandra to suffer from a multitude of learning and emotional difficulties – the most apparent a severe dyslexia that hampered her ability to talk, read and write. After nine years of strict, unrelenting instruction, David Cain finally felt ready to test his protege (for he barely, if ever, referred to Cassandra as his daughter), sending her to assassinate a Macanese 'bookmaker' named Faizul. Without fully realising what it was she'd been asked to do, seeing the murder of her target as little more than a training game – the likes of which she and her father often played – she struck a deathblow to the back of the male's neck. As he lay dying, Cassandra interpreted what had occurred in the only way she knew: through the reading of muscles and body language. Watching Faizul fall still, not breathing or showing any of the signs she associated with life, Cassandra was scarred emotionally. Quickly understanding that murder was wrong, and not wanting to aid or abet those that partook in it, she fled from her father and the League of Shadows as soon as she was able, using the lessons she'd been taught to evade recapture and keep from being found. For nearly eight years, she wandered the world, stricken with guilt. Where she could, she tried to help those in need, using her talents to punish those that murdered others and to protect those that couldn't protect themselves. Known in a number of locales as 'The Orphan', Cassandra was a tragic heroine, unable to reach out and communicate with those she strived to aid – unable to speak or write. Finally, she found herself in Gotham, and it was there she found her purpose. Her acts of vigilantism garnered the attention of Gotham's own protector – Batman. Recognising something of his brood in Cassandra and impressed by her abilities, Bruce Wayne found a way commune with her, using his own knowledge of the League to learn a physical sign language that Cain could interpret. Inviting her to train under him, Bruce offered Cassandra shelter, a family – something she'd never truly had, and a way to atone for the sin she'd committed as a child. Agreeing, Cain spent months learning basic speech patterns and perfecting a unique form of sign language, allowing her to commune with her 'brothers and sisters.' This, in turn, began to aid Cassandra in overcoming much of the emotional negligence imposed by her father. Taking Gotham as her new home, Cassandra adopted the monicker 'Black Bat' – becoming one of the brood tasked with the protection of Gotham's innocents. [attr="class","rostercatsub2"]HISTORY | [attr="class","rostercat2"]She stared unblinking through her eyeless mask, assessing every movement of the three tattooed thugs that stood across from her. The fourth already lay unmoving at her feet, his weapon- an iron bar - knocked just out of the reach of his grasping fingers. The shallow rise and fall of his chest told Cassandra that he lived, though the limpness of his limbs suggested he had been knocked out cold, quickly succumbing to the speed and brutality of her initial assault. Pointing a gloved finger toward the trio's unconscious ally, she tilted her head a little, considering what she wished to convey before speaking a single word – the intent of which she hoped was clear. “Warning.” And so it was. Should the others engage, they would meet the same fate. Their response was to laugh: loud guffaws that echoed around the enclosed alley, a sound meant to disturb, unnerve and mock her. However, Cassandra – the Black Bat – was entirely unaffected. Though they barked with boistrous confidence, she knew it to be feigned, their bodies giving them away. For all their bluster, they kept their distance from the vigilante, muscles tensed like those of frightened, cornered animals. They had no desire to rush forward and fight – not if they could find another, less risky way to end the conflict. Taking a step toward them brought near-instant silence, all three adopting more defensive stances, salvaged weapons – a baseball bat, a metal chain and a tire iron – raised protectively, as if hoping ward the Bat off. “Stay back, Freak!” An angry shout that fell on deaf ears. “Come any closer and you're gonna end up kisisng concrete!” Picking up her pace, Cassandra began to sprint forward, her purpose clear. In doing so, the criminal element she faced would react in one of two ways: they would scatter and flee, or be forced into a combat they would rather not enter – fight or flight. In her experience, Gotham's delinquents tended toward the former reaction, though they had little recorded success when doing so. This encounter, she predicted, was to be no different. .
