The classroom was filled with occupied tables, students of every mutagenic creed that Atlantis had to offer floating along their sides. Scrolls and tomes were piled on the furniture, and every student pored over them with attitudes just as diverse as their appearances and backgrounds. Garth sat behind the teacher's desk with his own ancient text open in front of him, one finger tracing the contours of a particular rune.
He could feel the disappointment and frustration radiating off a few of the more... brazen students. Garth had been ignoring it, though, up until that point. It was only upon the fourth heavy, intentionally melodramatic sigh that came from a particular one that he finally looked up, violet eyes flat and a mixture of bemused and resigned.
"Is something the matter, Vinthas?" he asked, dryly. The Atlantean shoved his scroll out of reach and crossed his arms. "I thought when our substitute was the Tempest, we'd be doing something fun. Not..." Vinthas gestured exasperatedly at the piles of texts. "Study is essential to becoming better at the craft. You all know this. It's not the most exciting truth, but it is true."
Vinthas was lapsing into a brooding pout, but another student piped in. "With respect, sir, we study every day. We don't get to apply that study practically very often." Vinthas added, "Yeah! When will we get to do something cool and fun, instead of just reading about it?" Tempest gently shut his book and floated up from his place, one hand propped on his hip.
"I remember the frustration. Believe me. That will come with time. For the moment, you're all too weak in your magic to actually - safely - accomplish anything like what you're describing." Yet another student, this time a more pensive one who'd not been irritated at all with the lesson's content of study, pointed out, "Maybe a demonstration, then?"
Garth smiled at the tactic. "I don't know if I can satisfy all of your curiosity by myself." Tempest thought that that would be his way out. He'd agreed to fill in at the Conservatory of Sorcery as a favor, and didn't particularly want to throw his magic around just to sate the boredom of a bunch of newer students. Just then, though, a figure appeared in the classroom's doorway and all of his temporary pupils's eyes lit up at seeing who, exactly, it was.
